Flaundens Hidden Gem

Tucked into the serene Chess Valley, The Bricklayers Arms is a cherished countryside haven. This ivy-draped 18th-century inn retains its original low oak beams and cosy log fires, creating an atmosphere both rustic and refined.

Under the guidance of Matt Jackson, once chef Alvin Michaels’ protégé the pub carries on its storied reputation for stellar Anglo‑French cuisine, recently crowned Dining Pub of the Year by the Good Pub Guide and awarded an AA Rosette. Chef Miroslav Schelling crafts dishes with flair, while the extensive wine list and local craft beers complement each meal beautifully.

Rich in History

The Bricklayers Arms in Flaunden began as a row of 18th-century cottages before becoming a public house in 1832 under the ownership of Benskins Brewery of Watford, a prominent name in Hertfordshire brewing. Tucked beside the village green, it became a favoured stop for travellers winding through the Chess Valley. In 2003, Alvin Michaels and his family took the helm, transforming it into an award-winning dining destination.

With Miroslav Schelling as head chef, the pub gained an AA Rosette and numerous accolades. It now continues to honour its past with traditional architecture and fine food, standing as a proud symbol of enduring English hospitality.
